For those of you who’ve never heard of or tried Om Ali before; it is a traditional Egyptian dessert; a super delicious, creamy, warm and comforting Mille-Feuilles bread pudding, that has a gorgeous mix of textures and flavors.
It’s so incredibly easy to put together and usually makes a special appearance at weddings and Ramadan buffets. To make it you’ll need:
For the Bread Pudding:
🥮 500 grams puff pastry
🥮 4 cups whole milk or Half & Half
🥮 ¾ cup sugar
🥮 1 can table cream, I used @tazah Ashta Cream
🥮 1 ½ teaspoon Vanilla
🥮 1 teaspoon Mastic paste (optional)
Mix-Ins and Toppings:
🥄 Nuts: I used coconut, chopped pecan, hazelnut, and pistachio
🥄 Dried fruits: I used raisins, cranberries and dried cherries
🥄 1 can table cream
Feel free to adjust the amount of milk and sugar to your taste, and use whatever dry fruits and nuts you like.
🥮 Cut thawed puff pastry sheets into small squares and arrange them in one layer on a baking sheet lined by parchment paper.
🥮 Bake them in a 375F preheated oven until they’re golden brown. Set them aside to cool off, then start layering Om Ali in your baking dish.
🥮 Break half of puff pastry squares by hand into small chunks, until the bottom of pan is all covered. Add a layer of mixed nuts, raisins, dried cherries and cranberries, and sprinkle some coconut on top. Repeat the layers, until the baking dish is 60% filled with the dry mix, leaving enough room for the milk.
🥮 In a medium sauce pan, mix milk, Ashta cream, sugar, vanilla, Mastic paste, and bring this mixture to a light boil.
🥮 Spread a layer of Ashta cream on top of the dry mix and slowly pour the hot milk mixture over it.
🥮 Let it sit for 5 minutes, then bake it on 350F until bubbling around the edges and the top is golden brown.
🥮 Add your favorite toppings, serve hot and enjoy 🤩 I added some pistachio cream, raisins, cranberries and a lot of pistachios and some hazelnut and coconut
Bon Appétit & Ramadan Kareem 💐🌙
